Speaking Topics

I'm currently giving talks about designing with and for people with communication limitations and the impacts of generative AI on learning.

Designing With People Who Use AAC

How design methods can be adapted to co-create technology with people who experience communication limitations that are often excluded from standard design practice.

Beyond the Benefits of Generative AI

A critical look at the harms, risks, and unintended consequences of generative AI in computing education, including over-reliance, trust, and equity concerns.

The Quiet Classroom

How growing reliance on generative AI is displacing peer-to-peer help-seeking, weakening classroom social interaction, and reshaping learning communities.

No Silver Bullets in Mentorship

Drawing from my experience leading a research lab with 50 active members, I conceptualize mentorship as a wicked design problem with no simple solutions.

Bio

Stephen MacNeil is an Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple University where he directs the Temple HCI lab. Dr. MacNeil designs and studies human–AI systems in collaboration with the people who use them to understand how AI can improve outcomes while sometimes producing unintended or harmful effects. Dr. MacNeil currently serves as a Principal Investigator at Temple University for the NIDILRR Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on AAC, leading research that advances accessibility for autistic children and others with communication limitations.

Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the UCSD Design Lab working with Dr. Steven Dow. He completed his PhD in Computing and Informatics at UNC Charlotte where he was advised by Dr. Celine Latulipe. He received my BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University where he was advised by Dr. Niklas Elmqvist.
